There’s nothing like a steaming mug of coffee in the morning to kick start your day, and especially if it’s a chilly one. Its rich flavor and refreshing aroma is enough to elevate your mood instantly if you’re a coffee enthusiast like me.
- Coffee makes you happier
On a deeper level though, coffee contains a stimulant called caffeine which when absorbed into the bloodstream, travels to the brain and causes an increase in production of the feel-good hormone, dopamine.
- Coffee improves productivity
This improves certain aspects of brain function, enhances moods and even boosts the energy levels in the body.
- Coffee helps you lose weight
This sees an increase in the metabolic rate of the body that has been proven to aid in fat burning. Yes, coffee can help your cause to lose weight. Coffee is also a great source of antioxidants which protect body cells from damage and are linked to other great health benefits.
- Coffee lowers your risk of Diabetes
Besides that, Medical Research has shown that coffee lowers your risk for Type II Diabetes by up to 50%, a big health problem affecting millions of people worldwide.
- Coffee lowers your risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
Coffee has also been found to lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease that affect people over the age of 65 and cause dementia. Parkinson’s, for example, is caused by the death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain and as we saw earlier, coffee consumption increases the production of dopamine. Unfortunately there are no known cures for these diseases which for now, places the focus on preventive measures, to which coffee contributes a 60% lower risk.
- Coffee lowers your risk of Lung Disease
Besides that, coffee appears to help protect the liver against Liver Cirrhosis – a condition in which the liver is largely replaced by scar tissue – as well as liver cancer. Studies have shown that coffee drinkers have up to a 40% lower risk of Liver Cancer.
